Ten papers exploring the sustainability of Arctic resource development have been published online in December 2020 as a special issue of Polar Record, a long-established and prestigious polar research journal from Cambridge University Press. This special issue is co-edited by Professor Akiho Shibata, the principal investigator of Research Program on International Law under the Arctic Challenge for Sustainability II (ArCS II, 2020-2025).
It contains research articles and commentaries by international law scholars, a political scientist, a glaciologist and an expert working for a Japanese Resource Development Corporation. This is the first time that so many interdisciplinary research papers by Japanese researchers have been published together under a unified theme in Polar Record.
This is the result of the international research collaboration and the capacity building of early-career researchers conducted under the Arctic Challenge for Sustainability (ArCS, 2015-2020) and the ArCS II projects. One of the guest co-editors is a graduate student from the United Kingdom, and other authors include Arctic international law scholars from Iceland and Canada and early-career researchers from Malaysia and Finland.
