The Arctic region is where the impact of global warming is most evident. Not only decrease of the sea ice extent in the Arctic Ocean, but also various changes of the atmosphere, oceans, snow and ice, and land are taking place. Meteorological and environmental data in the Arctic plays a very important role in understanding the environmental changes in the Arctic region.

SIGMA-B Automatic Weather Station (AWS)

The SIGMA-B Automatic Weather Station (AWS) Data Graph provides a variety of real-time data, including air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, up and down shortwave radiation, up and down longwave radiation, surface air pressure, snow height, snow temperature, and more. The SIGMA-B site is located on Qaanaaq ice cap at northwest Greenland (77°31’N, 69°04’W, 950 m a.s.l). This AWS is maintained and operated by SIGMA Project (PI: Teruo Aoki, National Institute of Polar Research).

Sea Ice Distribution, Sea Surface Temperature, and Snow Depth

The Earth Observation Satellite “SHIZUKU” of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is now providing semi-real time observation data of sea ice distribution , sea surface temperature and snow depth in the Arctic.

Arctic Sea Ice Extent

The extent of sea ice covering the Arctic Ocean changes during the year, reaching its maximum around late February to early March and its minimum around mid-September each year. The sea ice extent is steadily decreasing because of global warming.

A Digital Globe,“Dagik Earth”

On a digital globe, you can see the sea ice extent, sea surface temperature, snow depth, predicted changes in temperature and sea ice, and the surface temperature and concentration of black carbon. You can see them not only in the Arctic, but in other parts of the world as well.
