Application for Position as Project Researcher (FY2014)

The Research Organization of Information and Systems, National Institute of Polar Research is inviting talented and enthusiastic researchers to apply for the position of Project Researcher on the Green Network of Excellence (GRENE) Project involving research into climate change at the Arctic.

1. Project outline

The GRENE Arctic Climate Change Research Project is a joint initiative involving a comprehensive study of the rapid changes occurring in the climatic systems of the Arctic. Analysis of these changes is used to develop climate change models that can improve the precision and accuracy of predictive modeling. The Project also assesses the impact of climatic changes in the Arctic on Japan and on the world in general.

The joint Project, an integral component of our future vision for Japan, consists of a number of interlinked elements in line with the four strategic research objectives outlined by the Arctic Research Strategy Subcommittee:

◦ Understanding the mechanisms of the warming amplification in the Arctic
◦ Understanding the Arctic system for global climate and future change
◦ Evaluation of the impacts of Arctic change on weather and climate in Japan, marine ecosystems and fisheries
◦ Projection of sea ice distribution and Arctic sea routes

6. Terms and conditions

(1) Remuneration: Base pay of ¥331,000 per month, with potential for performance bonuses
(2) Allowances: Commuting allowance (up to ¥55,000)
(3) Research expenses: No reimbursement of specific research expenses to individual researchers
(4) Accommodation: No access to government employee housing or other housing owned by the Institute; no housing or accommodation allowance.
(5) Hours: 7 hours 45 minutes per day or 38 hours 45 minutes per week (discretionary working hours scheme)
(6) Holidays: Weekends and public holidays, end of year break (December 29 to January 3 inclusive), up to 20 days annual paid leave (unused days can be carried over to the following year); special leave (births, deaths and weddings, “refresh” time, maternity leave, compassionate leave to care for others)
(7) Welfare: Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Mutual Society of Health Insurance, worker’s accident compensation insurance, unemployment insurance, etc.

(3) Abstract of one thesis or paper (2,000 characters approx.) (see Attachment 3 (Word) )
(4) Copies of up to three theses or papers
(5) University graduation certificate or prospective graduation certificate
(6) Curriculum Vitae (see Attachment 4 (Excel) ) (standard format also acceptable; must show application ID and include portrait photograph)
(7) Additional copy of documents (1) through (6) (all on double-sided A4 paper)

8. Procedure

9. Deadline for applications

Applications must arrive by 5:00 pm Friday September 12, 2014.

10. Selection procedure

Review of application documents followed by interviews where required.

11. Employment

Project researchers will be employed by the Research Organization of Information and Systems, National Institute of Polar Research. The period of employment will normally be for one year, though this may be renewed during the course of the GRENE Arctic Climate Change Research Project (until March 31, 2016).

12. Other

◦All transport and accommodation expenses incurred in connection with the selection process shall be borne by the applicant.
◦Application documents may be rejected if incomplete or not presented in accordance with the stipulated requirements.
◦Application documents cannot be returned.
◦Where an offer of employment is made contingent on a doctorate being obtained but the applicant fails to obtain the doctorate, the offer may be withdrawn.
◦Successful applicants may not remain enrolled at graduate school after commencing employment.
◦The place of employment is expected to be either the organization of the recruitment coordinator or the National Institute of Polar Research.
◦Some travel expenses associated with commencing the position may be payable in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Research Organization of Information and Systems.
