Arctic Frontiers 2021

Reported by Hiroyuki ENOMOTO (NIPR)

Arctic Frontier 2021 presented and exchanged views on science and industry, policy, and the present and future beyond generations under the theme of “Building Bridges”. In particular, I was impressed by the opinions and effects of young researchers and indigenous peoples regarding their concerns, responses, and prospects for the future. It was also impressive that the basic policies of policy makers in the EU and Norway were announced and the panel directly exchanged opinions.

Norway introduced its responsibilities and activities as the Arctic Council, and policy makers frankly exchanged views with young people. The EU explained that it will actively carry out Green Deal activities with priority on climate change countermeasures.

The conference was characterized by introducing the promotion of climate change countermeasures, creating a society with hope for the next generation, and showing the attitude of the Arctic Council and the EU in it.

In the sessions on science policy and young people, experienced moderators actively exchanged opinions and outcomes from the presentations. I was also impressed by the fact that government officials were having discussions at these public remote conferences.

At the meeting, science sessions were held in parallel. The activities of MOSAiC, which had just finished, and the initial results were actively introduced.

The policy session and the science session were held independently, and the science session introduced and discussed the scientific achievements as a science symposium.

Participants seem to be divided into two interests. Normally, it seems that the venue and space are separated, however this year the conference was held by a remote conference system, and participants could come and go without worrying about the movement of both venues.
