Different conference format from Japan: JESIUM 2022

Overseas Fellowship Program Participant: FY2021 Third Call Short-Term Program
Genki Amma (The University of Kitakyushu)

I visited Finland from October 4 to 17, 2022, supported by the ArCS II Overseas Fellowship Program. During this dispatch, I tested measurement techniques for non-destroy algae field analysis methods and collected information about the impact of global warming on low temperature-adapted and the carbon cycle. Ice algae inhabit the ice. When surveying the habitat of this organism, it is necessary to destroy the ice to collect the algae, which requires time and energy survey the destruction of the ice to the habitat area. It is thought that a method that makes it easier than conventional survey methods helps accelerate Arctic research. Fraunhofer lines are deeper than in Japan in the Arctic region, making it possible to observe highly sensitive Fraunhofer lines. And since photosynthetic organisms fluoresce chlorophyll at a wavelength overlapping the wavelength of Fraunhofer lines, my main objective was to test a technique for non-destroying algae measurement of on-field algae analysis by using these two spectral lines.

The presentation at JESIUM 2022

Here is a report from JESIUM 2022, where participants gathered information about the impact of global warming on low temperature-adapted and the carbon cycle. The conference was held for five days. The first day was a social program with museum tours and a sauna, which is unique to Finland, etc. After the second day, a wide variety of research presentations on meteorology, plant vegetation, nutrition, and other topics are given. I was surprised at the scene of presenters and audience members drinking in hand during poster presentations. I felt that if such a system were introduced in Japan, it would lead to more active discussions.

Coffee break time during JESIUM 2022

I deeply appreciate the ArCS II Overseas Fellowship Program for giving me this opportunity, as well as all the people I met in Finland.
