Participation at the AGU Fall Meeting

Overseas Fellowship Program Participant: FY2022 Second Call Short-Term Program
Zarina Bikmullina (Hokkaido University)

In the framework of the ArCS II Overseas Fellowship Program for young researchers, I got an opportunity to attend the AGU Fall Meeting 2022 (Chicago, U.S., December 12-16, 2022). It was my first large-scale scientific conference with plenty of opportunities.

Poster session in my section

On the poster session, I presented my research project “Changes of fraction composition of petroleum in Arctic tundra soil with different periods after pollution termination”. I thoroughly worked on my poster content and design, and I got a valuable feedback that is helpful for improvement.

Attending sections as a listener allowed me to get inside of recent trends in organic geochemistry. In a section dedicated to organic geochemical tools, most talks were focused on glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs), alkanes, alkenones, and isotopes. Although there were no numerous works dedicated to my target compounds, I still used the chance to strengthen my knowledge of analytical approaches and recent trends in my field of study.

Exhibition hall

My favorite track was “Skills for science” – a series of lectures and seminars for young researchers. Plots visualization, open data access, articles writing and other topics that relevant for my future research were covered in this section.
The networking is an integral part of scientific meetings, and I used the opportunity to discuss topics related to my field of study and career opportunities for young researchers. In the exhibition hall, publishers, universities, governmental and private companies that produce the equipment for geosciences were represented. I obtained information about publications in scientific journals, got involved in popular science project of Purdue University and figured out some options for postdoc research.

I strongly appreciate this opportunity, and I would like to thank the organizing committee, the selection committee and all staffs that are involved in the work of ArCS II program.
