Joint research and research exchange at University of Exeter in UK

Overseas Fellowship Program Participant: FY2023 First Call Short-Term Program
Shuntaro Hata (Hokkaido University)

I visited Geography Department, University of Exeter in 3-17 May 2023, with supports from ArCS II oversea fellowship program. During the visit, I started collaborative research with Dr. Steven Palmer for developing new approach of satellite glaciology with high-resolution terrain model. We got progress on developing new approach based on first plan, fulfilling time with discussion about results and the interpretations one-by-one, in quite maniac stage. Further, we get unexpected-good result during the discussions. I realized the importance of detail on-site discussions and close communications.

Another objective of my visiting Exeter is research communications with geographers in UK. On 4 May, initial stage of this stay, we held a research seminar as a part of Geography Department Seminar series. I told my research topics about glacier and glacial lakes so far, and topics of satellite glaciology in the Arctic as objective of my stay. Because Geography is a neighbor research field for me, and we have a lot of common contents, we discussed about methods and techniques about filed and satellite observations (Fig. 1). Further, I participated the Environmental Intelligence Seminar Series (EI Seminar), by invitation by one of the participants of research seminar. At EI Seminar, I introduced my research topics about glaciers, and overview and review of glacier and topography research by using satellite image and terrain models. Since the participants of EI Seminar were many in the data science, I got questions about already available open-data, major techniques on satellite glaciology, and discussed about satellite observations in near future which open-data is further evolving forward. These communications make me realize the interests from researchers in other fields (Fig. 2).

This visiting to Exeter is meaningful for me getting progress on our new research by dense on-site discussions, and get communications with researchers in other fields. I would like to keep in touch with the group which have a variety in research fields, and expect further collaborations.
