Dr. Asgeir Brekke (Norway), former Visiting Professor at the National Institute of Polar Research, awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon

The government of Japan has announced, on April 29, 2022, that Dr. Asgeir Brekke, Professor Emeritus of UiT The Arctic University of Norway (former University of Tromsø) is awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, as part of the 2022 Spring Decoration for Foreign Nationals. This order, conferred by the Emperor, is in recognition of his many years distinguished service to the promotion of science (especially upper atmospheric science) and mutual understanding between Japan and Norway.

Professor Brekke has contributed to higher education and capacity building of young researchers of next generation, as a visiting professor at the National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) and Nagoya University.

In 1996, when Japan joined the European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) Scientific Association, which operates the world's largest-class atmospheric radars, he often visited Japan and participated in negotiations with the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture (Monbusho), to finally form an agreement for Japan to join EISCAT as an associate member.  All of us at NIPR would like to extend our sincere congratulations on this great honor.

The conferment ceremony will be held at the Embassy of Japan in Oslo.
