Public Relations & Education

We organize various events and disseminate information materials to publicize Japan’s Antarctic research and the ongoing activities of the research expedition team. We also run a program that enables teachers to join Antarctic expeditions and conduct live sessions from the Syowa Station. This initiative is intended to educate young people, who will be the next generation of researchers.

Teachers’ Antarctic Program

This program is open to elementary, junior high or high school teachers who are interested in polar science and research, giving them the opportunity to accompany the JARE team to Antarctica since the JARE51. The aim of the program is to equip teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to better inform school students in Japan about Antarctica by delivering lessons about Antarctica to their home schools from Syowa Station. In addition, teachers can apply their experience in Antarctica to their teaching after they return to Japan. We hope these activities will also lead to self-improvement among the teachers themselves as they gain knowledge about Antarctica, the global environment, and Antarctic research projects.

Live from Antarctica

Since 2004 when the Intelsat satellite communication antenna was installed at Syowa Station, we have held events where people can talk to JARE members at Syowa Station in real time via live satellite link to Japan and other countries. During the wintering period, we hold “Antarctic Classes” for schools in Japan. These classes provide unique educational opportunities to learn directly from the researchers stationed in Antarctica.
