Over the past five years, we have conducted the Program for Overseas Visits by Young Researchers, which is designed to foster next-generation young Arctic researchers and professionals who are capable of seeing the big picture of Arctic issues from diversified perspectives with their high level of expertise and providing solutions in cooperation with various stakeholders. As a result, a total of 52 young researchers participated in this program, including 22 for short-term dispatch and 30 for medium- and long-term dispatch. The number of people dispatched was 12 more than the final target of 40, which exceeded the original target by 30%. In addition, 42 people were dispatched to eight Arctic countries, accounting for 80% of the total number of people dispatched. Other than the Arctic countries, three researchers were dispatched to Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), a Germany-based world-renowned institution in the field of Arctic research. In addition, graduate students and researchers who gained a promotion constitute 30 – 35% of the total number of people dispatched. In other words, one-third of people dispatched through this program have opportunities for their future career after their participation, which is one of the successful results of this program.
