Strategic Dissemination of Arctic Information

The strategic dissemination of Arctic information is allocated as one Priority Subject of ArCS II to provide the results of advanced and interdisciplinary research on the Arctic to a wide range of domestic and international stakeholders, choosing the most appropriate means and content according to the various recipients of information, including researchers, policymakers, private companies, elementary/secondary school students, university/graduate students, and the general public.

Specifically, we implemented flexible activities in line with four menus: operations of the Arctic environment integrated information platform and the Arctic Sea Ice Information Center, education/ outreach activities, and expert participation in international forums and information sharing with policymakers. A dedicated science communicator was assigned to implement a variety of education/ outreach activities, including websites, SNS, public lectures, exhibitions, on-site classes, workshops, and publications. The Arctic Sea Ice Information Center was newly established to begin generating and disseminating sea ice information. In response to international meetings, we also collaborated with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), and other relevant ministries.

In a new attempt to understand how Japanese society perceives the Arctic and Arctic research, an internet survey was carried out targeting 1,000 people nationwide, and the results were used to decide outreach targets and methods based on differences between generations. By continuing similar surveys, it will be possible to assess long-term changes in awareness of the Arctic. Furthermore, it is necessary to continue to explore optimal ways to disseminate information in line with changes surrounding information dissemination, such as the regular use of AI and the diversification of SNS.

Disseminated information in a variety of ways, including holding public lectures and workshops for the public, and publishing newsletters and booklets
