- PACES (air Pollution in the Arctic: Climate, Environment and Societies)
The 2nd Open Science Workshop on air Pollution in the Arctic: Climate, Environment and Societies (PACES) was held on 27-29 June 2017 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. It overlapped with the AMAP Expert Group on Short-Lived Climate Forcers (afternoon of June 29th and June 30th). Both oral and poster presentations were made. The chairs of PACES are Drs. Chuck Brock, Kathy Law and Steve Arnold. The local organizer of the workshop was Dr. Knut von Salzen.
The purpose of this workshop is to present new results relating to all aspects of air pollution interactions with the Arctic environment and societies, to identify research needs on these topics, and to plan new activities. The scientific basis and experimental design for a proposed international study of pollutant transport from eastern Asia to the Arctic and North America (IMPAACT: Investigation of Multiscale Processes Affecting Atmospheric Chemical Transport) were discussed on June 28-29.
- AMAP Short-lived Climate Pollutants Expert Group (AMAP SLCP EG)
The AMAP Short-lived Climate Pollutants Expert Group (SLCP EG) held a meeting in Victoria, BC, Canada on 29-30 June 2017, back-to-back with the PACES Open Science Workshop on air Pollution in the Arctic: Climate, Environment and Societies (27-29 June).
AMAP produced two major assessments of black carbon and ozone, and methane as Arctic climate forcers in 2015. Following delivery of those assessments, it was decided to combine the previous AMAP expert groups on BC/O3 and Methane into a single expert group on SLCPs. The group is now co-Chaired by Kaarle Kupiainen (Finland), Mark Flanner (USA), and Andreas Stohl (Norway).
The AMAP WG has agreed a work-plan for the coming years that includes the following:
AMAP delivered assessments of scientific knowledge regarding SLCP impacts on Arctic climate in 2015 and plans to update these in the form of an interim update in 2019 with a focus on emissions scenarios and modelling and a comprehensive update in 2021 considering air pollution issues in an integrated context (working in collaboration with LRTAP bodies and other relevant groups, including coordination activities in relation to the European Union initiative on black carbon).
