From November 20 to 22, the meeting entitled ‘Recent Mass Loss of the Greenland Ice Sheet – Mechanism and Evaluation’ was held at the Institute of Low Temperature Science, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan.
This symposium, focusing on Greenland-related studies, has been annually held for six years since 2012. This year, about 40 researchers including social scientists, discussed and explained their researches during the 3-day meeting, where 15 out of the 32 presentations reported the research results under Theme 2 of the ArCS Project. It was an excellent opportunity for productive discussions and exchanges of ideas in line with the objectives of ArCS, amongst researchers hailing from various fields of natural as well as political/social sciences. Researchers from these different backgrounds expressed their forthright opinions, especially during the free discussion time at the end of the symposium. Consequently, we once again recognized the importance of keeping the connections between natural and social scientists and this meeting afforded a good opportunity for us to think about ways of advancing together. We would like to foster these relations among the different disciplines and continue such meetings for researchers focusing on a mutual subject, Greenland.
