From 27 November to 22 December 2019, I visited the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) at Potsdam Germany through the support from the Arctic Challenge for Sustainability (ArCS) Program for Overseas Visits by Young Researchers. During this stay, I assessed the performances of high-resolution models, which are deployed by Arctic-CORDEX team.
In previous studies, the reanalysis data sets were used to investigate Arctic atmospheric systems. However, the reanalysis data have large biases for the small-scale atmospheric system (e.g. cloud, radiation) because of relatively lower horizontal resolutions of the these data. In the Arctic Ocean, clouds are key elements of the Arctic climate system through their effects on radiation and surface heat budget. Therefore, Arctic-CORDEX teams developed high-resolution models for improving the performance of the Arctic cloud simulation. In this stay, to assess the performance of small-scale atmospheric systems in high-resolution models, we compared high-resolution model outputs with observation data obtained by Arctic cruise.
In the first week of my stay, I discussed the initial results of Arctic CORDEX models inter-comparison. In the second week of my stay, I discussed the details of high-resolution models of the AWI with AWI model developer. In the final week, I have a presentation about my progress during my stay at AWI atmospheric group seminar. I discussed new results during my period of visit and made a plan to make a paper about these results.
In this stay, I have foster new collaborations with AWI atmospheric researchers. Over the holidays, I enjoyed the Christmas market in Potsdam and experienced the traditional cultures in Germany. I would like to thank the staff of ArCS Program for Overseas Visits by Young Researchers.
