2017 GEO-XIV Plenary(GEO-week)

Japan-GEO exhibition booth was prepared at the time of GEO-XIV plenary by MAXT, JAXA, JAMSTEC, NIPR and NIES under the theme of "Japan's Contribution to GEOSS on Engagement Priorities".

The author put up posters of Arctic science activities of Japan with help from JAMSTEC and made short-lectures of ArCS activities along 2030Agenda or SDGs on 25 and 26 October. The title of the lecture was "The Arctic and SDGs". The lecture emphasized the importance of interoperability of earth observation, which has been the main target of GEO, as the base of every discussion toward the sustainability especially in the Arctic where in-situ data are difficult to find and to share. Some examples of ArCS activities were shown which enhanced possible interoperability of observation toward SDGs. Total number of audience was about 200 and they listened the lecture carefully. It may because the Arctic issues are very rare to be discussed among participated countries under GEO and GEOSS though there are GEO Cold Region Initiative. The author could have discussion with several audiences. Most of them welcome and expected for Japan Arctic science to develop in not only bi-lateral but also international activities. We should take it in mind deeply that so called "the Arctic Problem" is no more "Arctic-Only Problem".
