4 Strategic Goals and 11 Research Programs

In recent years, drastic changes have been undergoing in the Arctic, that is described as “New Arctic.” Researches have revealed that these changes affect not only the Arctic region, but also the social and economic activities and daily lives of people in Japan.

The environment of the Arctic is balanced under a highly fragile condition, and any change at one part can cause complex and impacts in a chain reaction, such as the Arctic warming amplification.

In cooperation with many research institutes in Japan and abroad, the project aims to realize a sustainable society in the changing Arctic. The project will promote collaborative researches through 11 Research Programs in natural science, engineering, humanities, and social sciences to understand the actual situation and processes of environmental change in the Arctic, to quantitatively predict the impacts and to study countermeasures.

In the field of natural science, we improve the accuracy of understanding the actual situation by using data measured with advanced technology, which is one of Japan’s advantages, aiming at sophistication of climate prediction leading to social implementations.

This highly accurate scientific data will be the basis and supporting information to step up our international presence in the legal and policy arena and to take a leading position in international cooperation as well as in the pursuit of Japan’s own interests. We also aim to play a role in activities that enable indigenous peoples to respond to environmental changes by utilizing Japanese knowledge and technologies in maintaining their livelihood and culture.

Strategic Goals

In ArCS II, interdisciplinary research collaboration is a key strategy.

Under four Strategic Goals, 11 Research Programs – including natural sciences, engineering, humanities, and social sciences – will collaborate to understand the actual situation and process of environmental change in the Arctic, to quantitatively predict its impact, and to study countermeasures with the aim of achieving integrated results.

Research Programs

The 11 Research Programs to be conducted in ArCS II are multidisciplinary.

Each program is expected to produce significant results in Arctic research through innovative technologies and advanced approaches. In addition, we will promote mutual collaboration among the research programs to further develop the research results and achieve the strategic goals and the project goal.
