In accordance with the objectives of the Arctic Challenge for Sustainability II (ArCS II) project we implement programs for the support of early career professionals. The Arcs II project provides funding to graduate students, early career researchers belonging to Japanese universities and other research institutions, as well as young practitioners from public and private institutions, to support their participation in international conferences for making presentations and collecting information, as well as their stay at overseas universities and research institutions for conducting research and expanding contacts along with fieldwork trips. We expect that these programs will stimulate further research and other activities by early career professionals and will help them expand their personal network at the international levels.

This call is launched prior to the announcement of the decision on the ArCS II project funding in FY 2024 so that the applications could be proceeded smoothly after the decision. Please note that depending on the amount of funding granted in FY 2024, there may be changed in the funding for this program.

As a priority program of the Arctic Challenge for Sustainability II (ArCS II) project, this call for applications invites a wide range of International Early Career Researchers from the Arctic and non-Arctic countries who are engaged in Arctic research and supports their research, by providing financial support for mid-to-long-term travel and residence at universities and research institutions in Japan. At the same time, this project aims to revitalize mutual exchange between Arctic researchers in Japan and early career researchers overseas and strengthen the cooperative system for international joint research.

This call for application started before the decision to grant a subsidy for the ArCS II project in FY2024 so that this program could be started smoothly after the decision. Note that there may be changes made in the future.

Activities to be conducted

The Candidate shall be engaged in the research on the Arctic region in collaboration with the Host Researcher.

The International Early Career Researchers will belong to a university or a research institution in Japan and be engaged in Arctic research under the guidance of the Host Researcher. This program is designed to help International Early Career Researchers develop their careers as researchers specializing in Arctic studies and expects them, in the future, to act as a liaison with their Host Institution by having them participate in working-level meetings and research meetings.

*In the second call for application, the minimum length of appointment was changed from “at least 12 months” to “at least 6 months”.

In FY 2023 we will continue accepting applications for both short- and mid-to-long-term travel programs (1 to 6 months). We will also support participation in international conferences held online or in Japan.

Purpose

The Arctic Challenge for Sustainability II (ArCS II) project supports participation in international symposiums to promote mutual exchange between Early Career Scientists in Japan and overseas including indigenous researchers and to foster Early Career Scientists involved in Arctic research by taking advantage of opportunities such as international symposiums to be held in Japan.

Overview

In accordance with the objectives of the Arctic Challenge for Sustainability II (ArCS II) project, especially for Priority Subject 1. “Capacity Building and Research Promotion”, Early Career Scientists (ECS) from not only Japan but also other countries are invited to apply for a research and observation plan using the research vessel MIRAI (R/V Mirai) Arctic cruise to be conducted from August to October 2023.

This call for application started before the decision to grant a subsidy for the ArCS II project in FY2023 so that this program could be started smoothly after the decision. Note that there may be changes made in the future.

Tentative Cruise Plan of R/V Mirai 2023 Arctic Cruise

  • Target area: Pacific Arctic region (PAR) (Beaufort, Chukchi, and northern Bering seas)
  • Tentative cruise schedule:
    Aug. 25, 2023: Departure from Shimizu, Japan
    Sept. 3, 2023: Arrival at Dutch Harbor (DH), AK, USA
    Sept. 5, 2023: Departure from DH (Research and observation in the PAR)
    Oct. 4, 2023: Arrival and Disembarkation at DH
  • Note that the details of this cruise are described in Appendix 1

Application Requirements

  • Graduate students affiliated with a university in Japan or other countries.
  • Early Career scientists affiliated with universities or research institutes in Japan or other countries. Note that research scientists should be within 7 years of obtaining their Ph.D. or younger than 40 years old (as of April 1, 2023).

In accordance with the objectives of the Arctic Challenge for Sustainability II (ArCS II) project we implement programs for the support of early career professionals. The ArCS II project provides funding to graduate students, early career researchers belonging to Japanese universities and other research institutions, as well as young practitioners from public and private institutions, to support their participation in international conferences for making presentations and collecting information, as well as their stay at overseas universities and research institutions for conducting research and expanding contacts along with fieldwork trips. We expect that these programs will stimulate further research and other activities by early career professionals and will help them expand their personal networks at the international level.

Although it is expected that the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to affect academic collaboration in FY 2022, in addition to short-term travel programs we started accepting applications for mid-to-long-term travel programs (1 to 6 months) at the first call in FY 2022. At the second call we will only accept applications for short-term travel programs. We will also support participation in international conferences held online or in Japan.

Selection criteria and notification of the results

The ArCS II Priority Subject 1 working group “Capacity Building and Research Promotion” assesses the applications and makes the selection. The applicants will receive notification of the results approximately one month after the end of the application period by e-mail (sent to the e-mail address specified in the application form).

Outline of the short-term program

* Participation fees for international online conferences and courses, along with international conferences to be held in Japan are also covered.
* Researchers applying for funding to participate in an international conference are expected to give a presentation at the conference in question.

*1 Undergraduate and research students may also apply if they expect to become graduate students by the start of the program.
*2 The 10-year term excludes maternity / parental leave taken after obtaining the degree.

• Is the applicant’s project, if supported by this program, likely to further their career in the Arctic-related field?
• Does the applicant have sufficient language and communication skills?
Participant’s obligations after the program • Submit a report
• Depending on the plan for the presentation of the results session, submit the presentation materials or take part in a panel discussion etc.

Purpose

As a priority program of the Arctic Challenge for Sustainability II (ArCS II) project, this call for applications invites a wide range of early career researchers from the Arctic and non-Arctic countries who are engaged in Arctic research, and supports their research by employing or accepting them at universities and research institutions in Japan. At the same time, this project aims to revitalize mutual exchange between Arctic researchers in Japan and early career researchers overseas and to strengthen the cooperative system for international joint research.

Activities to be conducted

The International Early Career Researchers will belong to a university or a research institution in Japan and be engaged in Arctic research under the guidance of the Host Researcher. This program is designed to help International Early Career Researchers develop their careers as researchers specializing in Arctic studies and expects them, in the future, to act as a liaison with their Host Institution by having them participate in working-level meetings and research meetings.

  • The International Early Career Researcher is required to prepare an application form in cooperation with the Host Researcher and submit a letter of consent (by the Candidate) to apply for Call for Application for ArCS II International Early Career Researchers Program ; a letter of recommendation (any format); and a copy of the transcript of the doctoral or the certificate of the degree.
  • If the applicant is selected for this program, he/she will be employed or accepted by the Host Institution and will be engaged in joint research with the Host Researcher in Japan. The applicant is requested to fully discuss his/her employment or other terms and conditions and reach a mutual agreement on them with the Host Researcher and the Host Institution before applying for this program.
  • The payment of salaries and expenses including the accommodation expenses will be executed by the Host Institution.

An International Early Career Researcher who wishes to have a Host Researcher referred to him/her shall submit the application document by the deadline, referring to “Referral of a Host Researcher.”

Purpose

As one of the Priority Subjects of the Arctic Challenge for Sustainability II (ArCS II), the International Research Exchange Program aims to develop outstanding human resources capable of leading Arctic research and to strengthen the capabilities of research groups by developing and further enhancing sustainable international joint research systems and human networks through collaboration with laboratories and research groups at overseas research institutions.

Details of Program

The program is an international joint research project focused on the Arctic region, which is implemented through mutual exchange between laboratories and research groups in Japanese research institutions such as universities, and their overseas counterparts. This program supports short-term and medium- to long-term visits to overseas sites by researchers, primarily young Japanese members, and invitations for overseas researchers to visit Japan, as well as holding international workshops, joint seminars and other events.

Role of Overseas Partner Institutions

  • Representatives of the overseas partner institution conducting this exchange (the overseas coordinators) should work with coordinators at the counterpart institution in Japan to complete the application form and submit the Agreement for participating in this exchange program.
  • Overseas coordinators should clearly identify the members of the overseas institution who will be participating in this program.
  • Please ensure you have an organization in place for hosting researchers, primarily young Japanese members.
  • Travel and living expenses, etc., will be paid by the Japanese coordinator’s organization.
